授業の概要 | This course teaches intermediate English composition skills and techniques. This course builds on basic writing skills to develop intermediate students towards an advanced level. Students will learn to write five different types of essays and will consider the appropriate writing for each type. |

学修の目的 | Students will learn how to write five types of essay: descriptive, expository, narrative, persuasive and argumentative while learning the basic mechanics of writing. |
学修の到達目標 | Students will learn to gather ideas, plan and organize a structure for presenting them, and finally compose the ideas into a composition approprite for the particular type of essay. |

学修内容 | Week 1: Introduction to the course: Content explanation, Expectations and Grading. Also, a level-check flash writing exercise. Week 2: Writing descriptive essays: how to give readers a picture of a scene, object or person. Week 3: Expository essay: clarifying topics and expressing opinions. Week 4: Narrative essay: telling true stories through essay form. Creative non-fiction. Week 5: Persuasive essay: convincing readers to agree with your point of view. Week 6: Argumentative essays: taking a stand or position with support or evidence. Week 7: First draft of all essay types, peer-editing and consultations. Week 8: Writing descriptive essays: describing difficult or challenging scenes or people. Week 9: Expository essays: how to handle writing about controversial topics. Week 10: Narrative essays: how to write twists, hooks, reveals and secrets. Week 11: Persuasive essays; convincing disbelievers (swimming against the tide). Week 12: Argumentative essays: how to choose the relevant research and support. Week 13: Peer-editing and consultations. Week 14: Review of all classes and final essays, checking rubrics and relevant instruction. Week 15: Final draft check and feedback. |
