授業の概要 | Short readings and English (only) discussion. |
---|---|
学修の目的 | I aim to (a) help the students improve their reading abilities, (b) focus on reading and understanding through context and NOT through depending on a dictionary, (c) use the topics to engage in thoughtful discussions and debates, and (d) improve students' speed not only in reading, but in speaking. Students are expected to do *about* 120 minutes of work outside of class each week. This is NOT the reading in the textbook, but will usually involve thinking about questions for discussion, some very basic research, and preparing topics to discuss in class. |
学修の到達目標 | At the end of the course, I intend that students will have learned more about *how* to read, rather than merely memorizing more vocabulary and grammar (although that is also somewhat important). Secondly, they will have greater confidence in expressing themselves in English. Finally, I hope that when students need to research or read for speed in English only, this class will help them feel stronger about doing so. |

受講要件 | To register for this course, you are required to have scored 600 or higher on TOEIC IP. Students who have earned two credits in TOEIC preparation courses are also eligible to register. |
予め履修が望ましい科目 | There are no specific entry requirements for this course other than to have a sufficiently high level of English and a desire to improve. Students must be aware that this course is taught ENTIRELY in English. If you want to read some English, translate it to Japanese and then discuss it in Japanese, there are many other courses you can take. If you wish to improve both your English writing and speaking while lessening your dependence on Japanese, this could be a good course for you. You can join this course even if you did not take the course in the first term (spring). |
