授業の概要 | American Malcontents: Watching and Discussing America in The Wire |
---|---|
学修の目的 | In the early years of the new millennium, television became the era-defining genre. Among a rich constellation of prestige offerings, The Wire, created by David Simon, stands out for its unflinching, realistic portrayal of urban America. Over five series, The Wire tackles urban poverty, the so-called “war-on-drugs,” crime and justice, the carceral system, trade unionism, education, local politics, the news media, and much more besides. This intricate drama benefits from a first-rate script, superb plotting, a wonderful ensemble cast, and an awareness of literary and filmic conventions that have elevated to become what many critics describe as the greatest television show ever made. We will watch the entire first season together, discussing each episode in detail, exploring the visceral and challenging America that it reveals, as well as the skillful manner in which it imagines this world. We will study the characterization, language use, themes, plot, contexts and aesthetic dimensions of the presentation using the techniques of literary and cultural analysis. |
学修の到達目標 | The course aims to promote fluency with contemporary American idiomatic speech, and to equip students with the cultural competencies to make sense of the complex social worlds depicted in contemporary US television. We will consider the key themes of the series, weighing them against the reality, and deploy a range of analytical and conceptual skills to reveal the artfulness of the design and the subtlety of the performance. The course will introduce the fundamental skills of cultural analysis. |
