学修の目的と方法

授業の概要	David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas: Genre, Style & Narrative
学修の目的	This seminar will concentrate on David Mitchell’s tour de force novel, Cloud Atlas, in an attempt to develop a refined critical understanding of the concepts of Genre, Style & Narrative. We will develop a detailed close reading of the novel, and at the same time, use it as a starting point to consider these questions in terms of the Anglo-American literary tradition.
学修の到達目標	The learning aim of this course is first of all, to experience for yourself the pleasure of completing a longer novel in English, and consider how it differs from other experiences of reading literature. Second, students will: develop their capacity for sustained reading and reflection on a major novel; sharpen their appreciation for complex, (“round” or “3-D”) characterization; extend their ability to read for plot and trace themes in long-form fiction; distinguish between national types and tendencies; practice analytical interpretation and close-reading; learn to discern the “tone” of narrative and recognise character-inflection or “focalization”; develop their critical vocabulary and practice using persuasively in oral and written English. Above all, it is hoped that students will come, selfishly, to ENJOY, reading English literature.
