授業の概要 | In this 16 week class, students are expected to gain a variety of useful strategies to improve their reading proficiency. This course attempts to endorse and foster a scholastic and positive attitude towards reading in English for pleasure. Independently study of the readings is required, including reflections with scratch notes. Students will contribute and facilitate reading circles; to recognize rhetorical patterns, main text ideas and share their opinions. Students should expect to share notable humanistic messages that are evidenced from 'reading between the lines'. Students will be assessed on their class participation and contributions in the form of group reading circles. There will also be a presentation element to this course to help students develop their skills with publically articulating inferred concepts, they can support their presentations using media, posters and visual aids. |

学修の目的 | A recent study by Yale University in the journal Social Science and Medicine found that people who read for 3.5 hours a week (which is only 30 minutes a day) live longer than non-readers. Specifically, 23 full months longer. If you want to live a long life: this course is the answer. This class challenges students to read between 5,000 (minimum) and 9,000 (maximum) words a week, from an appropriate reader, of the student's choosing. Students will further develop their passion for validating logic, information and opinions found in their readers, through reading circles and Q&A sessions. |
学修の到達目標 | After completing this course, students will be able to: (1) Use strategies for reading such as skimming, scanning and summarising facts from opinions (2) Read aloud a section with appropriate stress, rhythm and intelligible intonation (3) Speculate the definition of words from their context within the literature (4) Increase their reading speed and comprehension" |
