授業の概要 | This is a 16 week seminar in which we will explore dystopian literature: the North American Novel, "The Handmaid's Tale," by Margaret Atwood, and the British Novel, "Nineteen Eighty-Four [1984]," by George Orwell. During class we shall focus on features such as the use of neologisms, and the application of oxymorons. An exploration will be made concerning both novels, and whether their realisations of totalitarian governance is relevant to today's society. Assessments will include a 10% group presentation (in week 12), two 5% mini quizzes (week 4 and 7) and a final essay examination comparing and contrasting the novels (in week 16). |

学修の目的 | The purpose of this class is to equip students with a range of literary strategies to improve reading proficiency and promote literary inference competency. Activities will include intensive reading in groups, to understand, summarise, identify themes and connect literature to our current social realities. Students will learn target vocabulary and develop skills in planning, organising and developing their ideas. Student's will discuss the importance and power of language. |
学修の到達目標 | "After completing this course, students will be able to: (1) Recognise author's tone and purpose, using a variety of post-reading techniques. (2) Compare, contrast and speculate about the studied novels. (3) Identify important passages and connect them to other literature, and wider issues around the world. (4) Organise and write a unified and planned multiple-paragraph essay on the novels in this course." |

授業改善の工夫 | Reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and intensive reading will be encouraged. This will improve student's basic skills in surveying, predicting, inferring and making logical connections. They will be introduced to essay writing tips focusing on features such as linking devices i.e. 'moreover'. |
