授業の概要 | Topics for the course will be chosen by the instructor with the goal to enable students to think critically about UK and US cultures and culture in general. Through these topics, students will learn about contemporary issues in UK & US Cultures in addition to student-introduced topics during class and for presentations. Topics will include attitudes toward language variation, topical social issues such as gun rights and abortion rights, and deeper cultural issues such as superstitions and the demarcation of science and pseudo-science. Students are encouraged to adopt a critical view of these issues through various critical thinking tasks, presentations and homework assignments. Furthermore, non-Japanese students from the Faculty of Humanities, Law and Economics will assist in facilitating discussion/debate and cross-cultural communication and, as necessary, through additional means such as e-mail or SNS. |

学修の目的 | UK and USA Today A is a course that aims to develop students' understanding of, and to enable them to think critically about, UK and US culture, society, and language. This course also integrates a practical understanding of a variety of cultures and viewpoints through various communicative situations with people from different cultures. |

事前・事後学修の内容 | For homework and review, students will be expected to do topical readings provided by the instructor as well as write short weekly responses to topics covered in class, providing their own analyses and opinions. Also, three times during the semester, students will have an additional piece of homework related to their presentations. |
