授業の概要 | Excellent management leads to more productive, sustainable agriculture that reduces problems caused by soil degradation and agricultural wastes. This course is structured in two sessions to cover some of the critical sustainable agricultural management issues from the perspectives of science and policy: (1) Sustainable development and conservation methods of soil and pests, (2) Composting as a sustainable agricultural waste management practice. Assignments include quizzes, presentations, and discussions that emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and analysis. |

学修の目的 | To deepen and expand the understanding of theory and technology related to soil, pests, and composting in terms of sustainable agricultural practices. |
学修の到達目標 | Upon completion of this course, students will be able to improve: The fundamental knowledge on sustainable development, soil, pests, and composting agricultural waste management practices. Understand the new research methods and apply their basic knowledge to the related fields. Follow lectures conducted in English and extract the required information and writing academic reports. Communicate effectively regarding resource use and sustainable agricultural practices. |

プレゼンテーション/ディベートを取り入れた授業 グループ学習の要素を加えた授業 その他、能動的要素を加えた授業(ミニッツペーパー、シャトルカードなど) 教員と学生、学生相互のやり取りが、ほぼ英語で進められる授業 |
授業改善の工夫 | Students are expected to involve in active discussions during the lectures & presentation sessions. Students are encouraged to speak freely in English in the classroom. There are video tours of soil degradation and composting techniques. |

その他 | Two teachers conduct the course separately that help the students to expose to various teaching methods. Teachers supervise students individually as much as possible. This course will involve multiple activities for students. Much of the material is presented as printouts or soft copies of the related materials. Assignments, quizzes, discussions, report writing, and individual or group presentations are all part of the course. |

学修内容 | Lectures on the following topics are conducted 2 ~ 4 times to cover the total of 16 times of the lectures. 1.Impacts of climate change on agriculture, principles of sustainable development. 2. Land and soil: soil composition, formation, soil preparation and management, farming practices, soil degradation. 3. Pests and integrated pest management. 4.Agricultural wastes: fundamental principles, issues, possible solutions, management, treatments, and applications. 5. Composting: fundamentals, microorganisms, pathogen removal, and vermicomposting. 6. Conduct discussions and powerpoint presentations to review the lecture contents. |
事前・事後学修の内容 | The prior reading about sustainable agricultural practices, soil, pest & farm wastes management is encouraged. Active participation in class activities is highly recommended. |
