授業の概要 | Topics for the course will be chosen by the instructor with the goal to enable students to think critically about UK and US cultures and culture in general. Through these topics, students will learn about contemporary issues in UK & US Cultures in addition to student-introduced topics during class and for presentations. Topics will include the ways in which language is used in a variety of contexts such as in advertising, topical social issues such as improvements in health and welfare, and cultural issues related to the ideals of the Enlightenment. Students are encouraged to adopt a critical view of these issues through various critical thinking tasks, presentations and homework assignments. Furthermore, non-Japanese students from the Faculty of Humanities, Law and Economics will assist in facilitating discussion/debate and cross-cultural communication and, as necessary, through additional means such as e-mail or SNS. |

学修の目的 | UK and USA Today B is a course that aims to develop students' understanding of, and to enable them to think critically about, UK and US culture, society, and language. This course also integrates a practical understanding of a variety of cultures and viewpoints through various communicative situations with people from different cultures. |

Week 8:Culture: Problems in scientific thinking and pseudo-scientific thinking; Discussion/Cultural exchange: Cultural miscommunications and what happened Week 9:Student Presentation 2 (Culture) Week 10:Student Presentation 2 cont. (Culture); Cross-cultural experience (e-mail/SNS) Week 11:Society: Liberalism vs. Conservatism in the USA Week 12:Society: The Strict Father Model vs. The Nurturant Parent Model; Discussion/Cultural exchange: Do these models apply to your country? Why/why not? Week 13:Society: Applied the model: Gun control, student loans, social programs and taxes, military, death penalty, etc.; Discussion/Cultural exchange: How are these issues dealt with/discussed in your country? Week 14: Student Presentation 3 (Society) Week 15: Student Presentation 3 cont. (Society); Cross-cultural experience (e-mail/SNS); Class wrap up, final thoughts, review and outlook. Exam period. |
