学修の目的と方法

授業の概要	This course teaches intermediate English composition skills and techniques. This course builds on basic writing skills to develop beginner or intermediate students towards an advanced level. The course will focus on skills for organization and synthesizing smaller units of writing into larger ones, from sentences to paragraphs and then from paragraphs to compositions. Students will hopefully finish the course knowing how to organize thoughts or argument into a cohesive, rich and thoughtful essay.
学修の目的	Students will learn how to write a coherent paragraph and a cohesive five paragraph essay while learning the basic mechanics of writing.
学修の到達目標	Students will learn to gather ideas, plan and organize a structure for presenting them, and finally compose the ideas into a composition.

授業の特徴	PBL 特色ある教育プレゼンテーション/ディベートを取り入れた授業グループ学習の要素を加えた授業 Moodleを活用する授業その他、能動的要素を加えた授業（ミニッツペーパー、シャトルカードなど）英語を用いた教育教員と学生、学生相互のやり取りが、ほぼ英語で進められる授業

学修内容	Week 1: Introduction to the course: Content, Expectations and Grading. Also, a level-check flash writing exercise. Week 2: Identify what an essay is? It’s components and what separates it from other writing. Week 3: Paragraph structure and Planning. Week 4: Introduction and topic sentences. Week 5: Simple/Compound/Complex sentences. Week 6: Define and develop a main argument. Week 7: Structure and organize supportive arguments. Week 8: First draft check and feedback (consultations individual and as a class). Week 9: Phrase information in an intelligible and rhetorically effective manner. Week 10: Linking paragraphs, introduction to main body and main body to conclusion. Week 11: Looking at other essays, how to read them to improve your own composition. Week 12: Effective conclusions, what to include and what to avoid. Week 13: How to research, choose sources and evidence for support and reference. Week 14: Review of all classes and final essay rubric and relevant instruction. Week 15: Second draft check and feedback (consultations individual and as a class).
