学修の目的と方法

授業の概要	Advanced English conversation B is a discussion based course. This course aims to develop students' English proficiency by focusing on communication strategies and critical thinking discussions that will enable them to communicate their opinions, views and ideas. Topics will include personal and social issues for students to practice their communication strategies with.
学修の目的	The first semester will begin with a proficiency check (conversation) to assess students’ abilities and needs. Students will be given different communication strategies each week, they will pracitce the strategies together in different discussions until they are comfortable. They will be given alternate styles of the same strategy and have to employ them carefully in discussions (some of which will test their critical thinking). There will be conversation recordings, assessment and self-reflection.
学修の到達目標	"The goal is for students to: • Learn more than 20 communication strategies to improve length of English conversation, avoid communication breakdowns and be able to discuss and engage with topics where knowledge is limited. • To develop and give strong opinions confidently with precision. • To have high-level discussions that may require critical thinking. "

成績評価方法と基準	Grading Criteria; Classwork-40 points, Homework-30 points, Speaking recordings/assessment-30 points.

授業の特徴	PBL 特色ある教育プレゼンテーション/ディベートを取り入れた授業グループ学習の要素を加えた授業 Moodleを活用する授業その他、能動的要素を加えた授業（ミニッツペーパー、シャトルカードなど）英語を用いた教育教員と学生、学生相互のやり取りが、ほぼ英語で進められる授業

学修内容	Week 1: Introduction to the course: Content explanation, Expectations, Grading and a Conversation Recording (level-check) Week 2: Communication Strategies (CSs)1: How to start productive conversations (and finish) Week 3: CSs2: Follow-up questions, what are good/bad questions and seeking extra detail. Week 4: CSs3: Active listening and responding to encourage conversation partners. Week 5: CSs4: How to engage with personal/sensitive/challenging topics. Week 6: CSs5: Giving/Receiving opinions, making statements, using facts. Week 7: Conversation recording assessment. Week 8: CSs6: Agreeing/Disagreeing productively. Week 9: CSs7: Speaking in formal/informal (and in between) contexts. Week 10: CSs8: Praise/Scolding /admonishing/celebrating language and tools. Week 11: CSs9: Recovering from Conversation Breakdown. Week 12: CSs10: Not talking too much or too little, giving conversations balance. Week 13: CSs 11: Helping conversation partners reach conclusions and learn for themselves. Week 14: We will review all previous CSs and listen back to week 1 and 7 conversation recordings. Week 15: Final Conversation Recording.
事前・事後学修の内容	Students are expected to use English in conversations with other students every class. Outside of class, previous weeks Communication Strategies should be reviewed (handouts have been made to support this) and practiced with allocated converstion partners (to be chosen in class).
