学修の目的と方法

授業の概要 海洋生物科学を学ぶ上で必要な,科学英語の読解および聞き取りと会話に関する能力を修得する。
Majority of earth’s surface is covered with ocean and it is considered as the critical source of life, energy and resources. It directly influences on worldwide temperatures & weather. Therefore this course is specially designed to deepen the fundamental knowledge related to physical and biological aspects of the ocean. This course offers lectures, explanations based on video clips & handouts, opportunities to perform formal presentations in English along with the variety of opportunities to improve listening, reading, writing & communication skills in English. Here English is used as the medium to provide the scientific knowledge, since English becomes widely using language as a mean of instruction in a large number of educational institutions, language centers and universities and as a pathway to accessing broad knowledge of all fields. During this course, students will engage with scientific vocabularies, writing reports, formal presentations, asking questions & answering to questions in English related to the areas of marine organisms, marine environment, ocean water chemistry and geology.

[Qualities and abilities to be developed]
This course will help them to improve the fundamental knowledge, listen to English & extract required information, properly understand the research papers or any other scientific literature in English, involve in researches & projects and apply their knowledge to find options for the problems related to the aquaculture and fisheries industry in the future.

[Relationship with DP and CP]
In order to acquire the four abilities of "feeling," "thinking," and "communication," which are the goals of Mie University, this lecture aims to help students acquire the DP of the Faculty of Bioresources: (2) to accumulate basic knowledge of bioresources concerning life, environment, food, and health, (3) to develop scientific and logical thinking, and (4) to discuss and communicate these with others.
学修の目的 To provide fundamental knowledge related to the ocean environment and marine organisms.
To produce ideas an acceptable written form and extend the vocabulary in English related to the scientific fields particularly on marine biology & oceanography.
To improve communication skills in English by performing discussions, formal presentations, making questions by critical thinking & answering during presentation sessions.
To develop flexible and versatile human resources in this fast globalizing world.

・Improve the fundamental knowledge related to the field of marine biology & oceanography
・Follow lectures conducted in English
・Listen to the scientific English, extract required information and write that information in a formal report
・Conceptualize scientific information and express them in presentations (power point, poster etc.) answer to the questions and ask logical questions in English.
・Involve in national & international researches and projects
・Develop skills to challenge to the world without limiting to their own country.
・Find job opportunities both in national and international industries.

英語を用いた教育

教員と学生、学生相互のやり取りが、ほぼ英語で進められる授業
授業アンケート結果を受けての改善点 Students are expected to speak freely in English during class. Making mistakes is not a big deal. Don't laugh at other students' mistakes. Teacher speaks slowly and clearly which enable students to understand accurately. Form and proceedings of the lecture contents are subjected to change slightly following the ability of students.
教科書 Handouts containing scientific facts and information are used when required. Information on textbooks and reference materials, if any, will be provided in the guidance lesson.
参考書 Students will be informed during the guidance class, if it is necessary.
オフィスアワー Students may speak freely with the lecutrer before or after the class, or they may make an appointment by sending an email(tharanga@bio.mie-u.ac.jp).

その他 Students are expected to do preparation and revisions of the lessons to familiarize with the scientific English. The enthusiasm for learning is helpful for students to improve their skills in reading, listening, writing, critical thinking, and speaking.

事前・事後学修の内容 On time regular attendance and submission of homework , well prepared and active participation in class activities are strongly recommended. Those who want to upgrade the presentation skill further, we advise you to take the course on “presentation methods” which conducts from 16:20~17:50 on Tuesday in second semester.
Before and after the class, the preparation and review for four hours par week is necessary.
